ANKARA, Turkey - A strong earthquake hit Aegean coast of Turkey on Friday, leaving two people dead on the Greek island of Kos.

The strong quake, measured as being a 6.6 magnitude by the Kandilli Observatory of Boaziçi University hit the Aegean coast early in the day, including one Turkish citizen.

According to the Kandilli Observatory, some 90 people, five of them in critical condition, were also injured in the Aegean province of Mula and its districts.

Officials at the Kandilli observatory stated the intensity of the quake was 7.0 and the epicenter of the quake was the Gökova Gulf.

According to Disaster and Emergency Management authorities (AFAD), the quake occurred at a depth of 7.8 kilometer.

Officials remarked that Greece's Kos Island had been affected by the quake more than Turkey and large-scale damage had occurred on the island.

Haluk Ozener, the manager of the Kandilli observatory said the earthquake had been felt severely, especially in Bodrum.

Official said that at least 160 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial quake.

Further, a 13 centimeter tsunami wave has been recorded in the Aegean province of Mula's Bodrum district.

According to officials, sea water had drenched nearby soil up to 100 meters along the seaside.

One official said, "Water came flooding from 10 to 100 meters. The wave's height was vertically about 30 centimeters, but what is important is the strength of the flow."

Reports noted that at least 60 vehicles parked on roads near Gümbet beach were dragged away after water levels rose due to the quake.

Several boats capsized in the sea due to the tsunami wave in Gümbet that reported a large-scale damage in the area.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said that a ferry was later sent from Bodrum to Kos to evacuate around 200 Turkish citizens who were on vacation on the island.

The ministry also confirmed that one Turkish citizen was killed and another was heavily injured from the earthquake.

It said in a statement, "Evacuation work continues for over 200 of our citizens. Ship services are not allowed from Bodrum or other parts of Greece as the port and customs building are damaged. Permission has been granted for a special voyage following a meeting with the harbor head of Kos. A ship with a capacity for approximately 250 passengers departed from Bodrum under the coordination of our consulate general to Kos. It will move to Bodrum after boarding our citizens. Then, it will do another trip to Kos."

A few hours after the earthquake, Mula Governor Esengül Civelek told initial reports indicated no casualties or structural damage.

She added that some residents, fearing more damage, had spent the night outside because of panic.

She said that no structural damage was reported but a small number of residents were slightly injured in the panic.

Adding, "There is no electricity outage, but there have been some electric faults due to the earthquake. We are working on it."

Mula Mayor Osman Gürün said authorities took immediate measures against fires due to the damage in electricity transmission lines.
