The Illinois Terrorism and Intelligence Centre has revealed that a cyber strike was launched on a public water system in the state.

The attack, which came from outside the US, caused damage to the master station.

The cyber assault occurred on the water pumping facility in the city of Springfield last week, after attackers had been in the system for some time.

While the online intruders only managed to burn out a pump at the facility, officials have warned they could have literally taken control of the system.

The event was only noticed when the hackers turned the burnt-out pump on and off.

The attack has been traced back to a Russian computer.
