Tajik government bans hijab
Tajikistan News.Net Monday 14th September, 2009
In Tajikistan education officials are meeting with parents to discuss a ban on the wearing of the hijab, or Islamic headscarf, in schools.
The Education Ministry, which recently introduced a new school uniform, has ordered the hijab should be removed and only replaced by national scarfs.
The same rule will also be imposed on Muslim teachers.
The Education Ministry acted after receiving complaints from Muslim parents wanting their children to wear head coverings at school.
In northwest Sughd Province, some children and university students were expelled after wearing the hijab. Email this story to a friend
