`Malaysian Indians feel let down by opposition alliance

Tajikistan News.Net
Thursday 11th March, 2010 (IANS)

Malaysian Indians feel 'extremely let down' by the opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat (PR) they voted for in a big way two years ago, a special report in a Tamil daily here said.

No concrete plan or action has been initiated by PR-held states to uplift the status of Indians, while Barisan Nasional (BN), the ruling alliance under the stewardship of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, is attracting the community again, the Makkal Osai report said.

Malaysia is home to nearly two million ethnic Indians, a bulk of them Tamils who settled here during the British era.

The ethnic Indians, who are traditional supporters of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) and smaller BN constituents, shifted away from it and voted for the PR alliance that won 88 seats in parliament and wrested control of five of the 13 states.

According to a post-poll survey, about 68 percent ethnic Indians shifted away from the BN. A general feeling of neglect and fewer opportunities in jobs and education than the majority Malays and ethnic Chinese caused this shift, even as the two larger ethnic groups also shifted away from the BN in the election held in March 2008.

The run-up to the election had witnessed controversy over shifting of a Hindu temple in October 2007, leading to a protest march by the Hindu Rights Action Front (Hindraf) that was declared illegal and five of its leaders jailed for several months.

MIC, the largest Indian party, retained only three of 19 seats and its long-time and minister, S. Samy Vellu, lost his bid at re-election to parliament.

Vellu said people now realised promises were made 'just to win votes and not with the intention of helping the community', The Star newspaper said Thursday.

P. Uthayakumar, one of the Hindraf leaders who was jailed, slammed PR, saying its leaders had failed to fulfil promises made during the last election to solve problems faced by the Indian poor.

For such are the cruel realities of politics. If you don’t have a powerful base either in terms of numbers or economic strength, then you will be sidelined as the above report clearly illustrates. The only way forward for the Indians is to unite behind one party whereby you have greater bargaining leverage. Alas the MIC which has the infrastructure, the history and credibility has fallen far short in terms of achievement. Perhaps if the overstaying Samy Vellu were to be persuaded to leave soon there is still a chance for MIC to rise. But that seems for now to be wishful thinking. The other parties do not have the gravitas or experience to attract the voters. Unfortunately.

the sky the limit

initially i thought that (indians) were the victims of many injustice that had befall upon them, but their so call leaders are all so dramatic and will not fail to incite trouble and unrest at the spur of moment, they cry, beg , resort to violence, throw tantrums like babies when circumtances is not in their favour, demanding aid and instant help as if the world owes them. what i really mean is that all the leaders in the political parties (indians base) are selfish. hindraf burst into the scence like some heroes, in the end they are just the same as MIC, taking care of own pockets(filling with RM) as the innocent and poor are sideline again and again, lallang politics is best for them.

This Indian writer think all his people are saint

Wake up my friend. There are crooks in Indian just like other if not more. Don’t expect special treatment for indian just because indian elected some one, that is immature or having a corrupted mind. Elected official should treat all as equal, give the indian what they give to other. That is the way to go, it should be color blind.
By the way, there are indian crooks who rejected double storey house in replace of their squatter home arranged by their elected state government, not knowing that 80% of state citizen never have the luxury to own such a piece of property that worth RM500,000.00. These were greedy indian that give bad name to their community.

malaysian indian time bomb

This article appears to be part of BN’s (read Umno)integrated ploy to paint Pakatan Rakyat black and themselves white which is so blatantly rampant these days. Today (March 11) TV3 prime news carried a similar feature showing how Pakatan have made life miserable for the Rakyat in States run by them. TV3 even had the gall to feature former Selangor Menteri Besar Khir Toyo(who managed to build a palace for himself during his rule)saying how people are being deprived in these Pakatan States.
But Pakatan leaders definitely need to do a serious study on the problems facing the Malaysian Indians. The growing crime rate and social ills facing the Indian youth in this country could blow up in the face of the leaders if something is not done immediately. You should have seen the way the youths behaved in the recent Thaipusam celebrations at Batu Caves. They are putting fear and disgust of them, in the heart of all Malaysians.
Indian students especially the majority of them who are lumped up in the last classes are also giving schools a major headache. They are going the way of the blacks in the US as like the black community in the US, Indians in Malaysia are also regarded as former slaves/coolies by the authorities.

God help those who help themselve

Malaysian inidan is a time bomb no doubt. Outsider can help to a certain extend. It is their community leaders that should shoulder most of the responsibility. Now that the country is having a real chance to have a two party system in Pakatan Rakyat, where voters one day will have more say in national policy that benefit all citizen, Indian leaders should stand out and fight those demagogues spreading lies to line their own pocket. What are those indian in MIC and PPP working for? They are the ones that rip off the chance to set Indian free.

yups

1Malaysia is just a smokescreen to keep everyone quiet while conditions in the country continue to deteriorate. Malaysia is set in its own ways and will never change. Why do you think more than 300,000 Malaysians emigrated out of this country in 2008 and 2009? Why do you think Malaysians have become one of the largest number of property buyers in Singapore in recent years? Somebody must know something, don’t you think? Smart up, all!
