ZAMBOANGA CITY, Oct. 16 (PIA) - More than a hundred kasambahays or domestic workers in Zamboanga City gathered for a public hearing to determine if an adjustment in the wages of kasambahays in Zamboanga Peninsula is warranted.

The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board IX (RTWPB IX) conducted the public hearing for the kasambahays to be able to help them sustain the needs of their families.

RTWPB IX Chairperson and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE IX) Regional Director Ofelia Domingo said "we want to know from them if they need the wage increase and how much increase is needed," Dir. Domingo said.

Meanwhile, the Wage Order No. 1 in Region 9 published in 2016 states that the minimum wage of the kasambahays is Php2,500 for cities and first class municipalities and Php2,000 for other municipalities. The wage order applies to all domestic workers whether on a stay-in or stay-out arrangements.

However, most of the workers complain that due to the increase of the basic commodities, the amount of the wage they are earning is not enough especially for those who have children and families. They suggested for a Php500 to Php1,000 pesos increase of their minimum wage.

However, the RTWPB IX will still have to determine as to which kasambahays will be covered by the minimum wage, as there are those who render only less than 8 hours of work a day.

Labor sector representative Jose Suan also supports the wage increase for the kasambahays and assures the positive outcome of the public hearing through the deliberation of the board members. "The Kasambahays are a big help to the families and communities, and it is only necessary to look after their welfare," Suan said.

Suan also emphasized that the salary of the kasambahays need to be amenable so they will find less reason to look for employment overseas, leaving their families behind. (NBW/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
