KABUL, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan on Sunday reported 584 new COVID-19 cases after the country conducted 1,206 tests since early Saturday, the country's Ministry of Public Health confirmed.
The new infections have brought to 10,582 the total number of people infected to the virus, including 9,289 active cases, throughout the country, the ministry said in a statement.
Two COVID-19 patients died since early Saturday, bringing the death toll to 218.
A total of 35 people had showed improvement and discharged from hospitals during the period, taking the number of recovered people to 1,075, according to the statement.
The statement came as the country marked a three-day Eid al-Fitr religious festival, starting from Sunday.
On Saturday, the Afghan gov't urged citizens to respect the lockdown during Eid al-Fitr days in big cities and towns, warning that the recent neglect of restrictions in the capital city Kabul had been a main factor for the increase of new coronavirus cases in the city.
