BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 24,092 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the national tally to 3,544,623, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 590 new deaths were reported, taking the nationwide count to 65,085.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia recorded 14,224 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, the highest single-day rise since the outbreak of the virus, bringing the country's total cases to 896,642, the Health Ministry said.

The ministry also reported 283 more fatalities, bringing the country's coronavirus death toll to 25,767.

ULAN BATOR -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in Mongolia has increased to 1,512, the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) said Saturday.

A total of 21 more locally transmitted cases were reported in the past 24 hours after 18,487 tests had been conducted across the country, the center said in a statement.

BANGKOK -- Thailand on Saturday confirmed 230 new cases of coronavirus infection, mostly domestic, and one more fatality, according to the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Of the total new cases, 209 cases were reported as domestic while 21 others had returned from abroad and tested positive in the country, CCSA spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said.

SHIJIAZHUANG -- Shijiazhuang, capital of north China's Hebei Province, found 247 residents positive for the novel coronavirus in its second round of citywide nucleic acid testing, authorities said Saturday.

The cases were screened out in eight county-level areas of the city, Xu Jianpei, vice governor of the province, told a press conference.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 580 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Saturday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 71,820.

The daily caseload stayed below 600 for six straight days, after posting 451 on Jan. 11. It peaked at 1,240 on Dec. 25.

NEW DELHI -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide vaccination drive on Saturday to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through the day as many as 300,000 recipients would receive their first shot of the vaccine at 3,006 sites set up across the country. Around 100 beneficiaries will be vaccinated at each session site on the inaugural day.

CHANGCHUN -- A city in northeast China's Jilin Province on Saturday reported 49 new asymptomatic infections of the novel coronavirus as of 10 a.m., authorities said.

The cases were all close contacts or secondary close contacts of earlier infections exposed in a local training course in the city of Tonghua, according to a press conference held by the city government Saturday.
