PanARMENIAN.Net - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said that Azerbaijan "did not aim to destroy Armenia" or deprive it of independence. He made the remarks during a meeting with residents in Zangilan while referring to European observers stationed on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

"Today, the so-called European observers are allegedly still monitoring the Azerbaijani-Armenian border. I said back then as well that if we fired even once, they would immediately flee and no trace of them would remain there. But they behave as if they are protecting Armenia from us. There is no need to protect Armenia from us. We have achieved everything we wanted," Aliyev said, according to APA.

At the same time, he stated that Azerbaijan should remain vigilant as long as there are forces in Armenian society with what he described as "anti-Azerbaijani sentiments."

Aliyev also referred to Armenians as "wild occupiers."

He added that "the Azerbaijani people have done nothing bad to the Armenian people."

"This is looting, hostility and cruelty, all entirely groundless. The Azerbaijani people have done nothing bad to the Armenian people. The reasons for their hatred toward us should probably be studied by psychiatrists, psychologists and doctors. As long as political forces exist in Armenian society that live with hatred toward Azerbaijan, we must remain vigilant," Aliyev said.

Aliyev "forgot" to mention that the military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh were preceded by massacres of Armenians in Baku, Sumgait, Kirovabad and other Azerbaijani cities, from which more than 400,000 Armenians were expelled after losing all their property and possessions. Those events were preceded by massacres of Armenians in Shushi and nearby settlements in 1919-1920, when more than 20,000 Armenians were killed.
